Almost Human

We bought a squirrel proof feeder.

Designed to dissuade a rodent daring to dream of riches,
it was hung above the sodden dross on the crook of a black iron post.

One resident of a neighboring oak,
tried time and again, without success,

to taste the meats set for the birds,
who laughed to watch him tumble,

but he learned in process of attempts ,
to loosed some smaller sunflower seeds,

that fell to the earth in dribs and drabs,
where a meager meal could be made.

If only he knew how close he came,
to being truly human.
